Art and Literacy: illustrating The Sword in the Stone

Friday 23rd March

In our Art lesson this week Ospreys looked at different illustrations of the stories of King Arthur, from the different versions of the stories we are reading in literacy. We focused on black and white images and noted how shading and direction is used to create different textures, and learned about the use of woodcut printing in early books. We looked in particular at the work of the artist Aubrey Beardsley, who created black and white ink illustrations for an edition of the King Arthur stories in an Art Nouveau style. Pupils then made a practice drawing into their sketch books. Next week we will do our final drawings, and use just one colour to finish them.
